BUILD SELF-BELIEF THROUGH ACTION

Build Self Belief (Even if Your Starting from Zero)
There was a time when I never questioned whether I was capable.
When I graduated with a BA and later an MA in Graphic Design, I was certain of one thing: I wanted to build my own business. I didn't know exactly what it would become, but I knew I wanted to create something that belonged to me rather than spend my career providing an hourly service for someone else.
Like many graduates, I worked for other companies first. One role involved helping develop mathematical teaching resources, while another saw me training to become a Chartered Accountant in London. Although I learnt valuable business skills—particularly bookkeeping—I soon realised that accountancy wasn't where my strengths or interests lay.
Looking back, one thing stands out.
I wasn't afraid of making decisions.
If something wasn't right, I changed direction and looked for another opportunity.
Confidence Didn't Come First—Curiosity Did
One unexpected opportunity completely changed my career.
I discovered desktop publishing software at a time when it was beginning to transform the publishing industry. Fascinated by what it could do, I taught myself everything I could. Before long, I found myself helping a research company use specialist software and was unexpectedly asked to train their staff.
The managing director told me I could even name my own price.
That moment has stayed with me over the years because I never stopped to ask myself whether I was "good enough." I simply accepted the challenge and got on with it.
That decision led to years of running my own training business, delivering courses across the UK, writing training manuals, developing bespoke course materials and even spending a month in Munich training journalists and secretaries. Looking back now, I realise those opportunities came because I was willing to say yes before I felt I had everything figured out.
Life Has a Way of Changing Us
Of course, life rarely follows a straight line.
The market changed. Competition increased. Prices fell. My business became harder to sustain, and I found myself taking on work that paid the bills but no longer inspired me.
Then life brought other challenges—marriage, divorce and eventually returning to my home town after leaving London.
There was a period of my life when I completely lost sight of the confident person I had once been. Severe depression, difficult family circumstances and uncertainty about my future left me questioning almost every decision.
It took time, support and a great deal of patience to begin rebuilding my confidence—not the confidence people see on the outside, but the quieter confidence that allows you to trust your own judgement again.
When Fear Wears the Disguise of Preparation
As I became interested in building an online business, I noticed something about myself.
I wasn't avoiding hard work.
In fact, I was working constantly.
I was researching, buying courses, planning ideas, creating products and searching for the perfect strategy.
On the surface, it looked productive.
In reality, I had slipped into something many entrepreneurs experience without even realising it: replacing action with preparation.
I convinced myself that one more course, one more product or one more tweak would finally make me feel ready.
But confidence doesn't grow through endless preparation.
It grows when we begin taking action again.
What I've Learnt About Self-Belief
Looking back over my career, I've realised that self-belief isn't something we either have or don't have.
It's something we build.
Every new skill I learnt—whether it was desktop publishing, Microsoft Office applications, graphic software or, more recently, digital products and online marketing—began with not knowing.
Some of those skills came through formal education.
Many more came through curiosity, persistence and teaching myself along the way.
The common thread has never been perfection.
It's been a willingness to keep learning and keep moving.
Why I'm Sharing This
I'm not writing from the perspective of someone who has always had confidence.
I'm writing as someone who has experienced both ends of the journey.
I've known what it feels like to confidently build a business, and I've known what it feels like to lose that confidence through life's challenges.
The encouraging part is this:
Confidence can be rebuilt.
Not overnight.
Not by waiting.
But by taking one small step after another.
That's why I'm creating resources for women who are starting—or restarting—their own business journey.
Because I know how easy it is to believe you've missed your chance.
I also know that you probably haven't.
One Small Step Today
If you're waiting until you feel completely confident before taking action, consider this:
Perhaps confidence isn't the starting point.
Perhaps action is.
Ask yourself one simple question:
What's one small step I can take today that my future self will thank me for?
Then do that.
Not because you feel ready.
But because every small action is another vote of confidence in the person you're becoming.
